Princeton officer killed in line of duty to be honored on 100th anniversary

Law enforcement officers in Gibson County will honor a man who served long before their time in a special ceremony to be held 100 years after he died in the line of duty.

Princeton Police Officer Harrison Clement Hitch was killed in the line of duty on May 11, 1913 while attempting to arrest the ex-husband of a woman at her house.  When Officer Hitch arrived, he found the man was armed and while trying to get him to surrender his weapon, the suspect fired.  Officer Hitch was struck by three rounds, but was able to return fire, wounding the suspect in the arm before staggering out to the front porch where he died.

Bike to School Day in Francisco Wednesday

Safe Kids Gibson County will join Francisco Elementary to celebrate Bike to School Day in Francisco on Wednesday. This event brings together children, parents and educators to raise awareness about bike safety.  At least 75 kids are expected to participate according to school officials.

In partnership with Easton-Bell Sports, Bike to School Day will be celebrated in hundreds of communities across the United States as part of National Bike Month. All events will focus on promoting biking to school as a safe and fun method of transportation, while highlighting important bike safety information, like wearing a helmet.

“Helmets can reduce the risk of severe brain injuries by 88 percent,” said Jennifer Tuley, RN Safe Kids Gibson County.  “However, many children simply do not wear them. We have a simple saying, ‘Use your head. Wear a helmet.’”

School officials ask that individuals traveling in the area of Francisco Elementary (and all schools) be extra cautious to children biking to school.

Rare double rainbow in Haubstadt

Rare double rainbow in Haubstadt

I snapped this pic of a double rainbow Friday evening in Haubstadt. Sure…we all have seen a rainbow but a double rainbow is a rare weather viewing treat. Yes…it is possible to have more than two.

The best time to see a rainbow is during the morning or evening when the sun is lower in the sky. Rain is one side of the sky; the sun on the other…most cases behind you. The colors are present but we see them with a human eye due to the billions of water droplets and sunlight reflections from the rain.

The second grade class from Lowell South Elementary in Princeton just finished up their weather unit and they have been learning about fractions.

I started off showing the class how the seasons work with respect to the tilt of the Earth. Most of the students were aware that the planet Saturn has been visible on clear nights.

I finished up with storm chasing video from Gibson County.
