Six questions with...Doggie Do Right

"Six Questions" is a Q&A with a local business inside our 14 News Community web sites.  Doggie Do Right in Fort Branch offers dog training, boarding, and grooming.  Pam Hancock is a professional dog trainer who works out of the facility. She introduces us to the business and offers some tips for dog owners and trainers.

  1. Tell us a little about your business

We offer the most up to date positive reinforcement dog training techniques in our newly expanded facility. Consultations are available for owners concerned about their dog’s behavior. We are currently accepting appointments for grooming and boarding reservations in our resort at 2380 E 600 S Fort Branch.

  1. What do you like most about your work?

I love working with dogs and their owners. The relationship between dog and owner is unique, and meeting the needs to make it a truly enjoyable one by offering needed training is very rewarding. Also being able to offer a comfortable place for the family pet to stay while their family is away is something we take pride in.

  1. What are a couple of important points for new dog owners to remember?

Puppies go through a socialization period from the time they are 6 to 16 weeks of age.Early, positive exposure to different sights and sounds is very important to reduce the chances of dogs having behavior issues later in life. Training your dog is key to the relationship you have with them. Our puppy classes offer an atmosphere for socialization and give information to make adding a puppy to your home enjoyable!  Focus on teaching your dog what you want them to do instead of just correcting things you don’t like.Behaviors that get rewarded get repeated!

  1. Are some dogs easier to train than others?

Different breeds have different characteristics. So it is important to research and choose a dog that has qualities that match your lifestyle and what you are wanting in a companion.

  1. Why is it important to have your dog bathed and groomed?

Regular grooming appointments are part of keeping your pet happy and healthy.Grooming appointments are recommended every 4-6 weeks.

  1. When someone has to board a dog, what can they do to make the time away less stressful on the animal?

At our boarding resort, we require that the owners bring the dog’s regular food.We keep their diet and feeding schedule as close to what they are use to at home as we can. There are also extra play sessions and leash walks available, as well as swim time and agility play time.  Keeping the dogs comfortable with bedding, toys, and treats that they are used to is also helpful. Our staff offers lots of one on one attention to each dog, getting to know each one personally. We are also experienced in giving medication when required for our guests. Your vacation is a lot more enjoyable when you are comfortable your pet is being well cared for!
