Gibson Co. health ranking takes a nose dive | Health
Indiana State Health officials have named Gibson County the 41st healthiest county in the state this year and local officials aren't happy with the drop.
Last year Gibson County was the 12th healthiest county in Indiana.
Jennifer Tuley with the Health Department says she 'wasn't happy at all" with the ranking and already has plans to correct the overall health of the county.
She says a few new factors that were considered in the rankings contributed to the low standing.
For example, there are 2,600 residents per dentist, which Tuley says is far too high.
Another factor used in the calculation was fast food restaurants. 55% of all restaurants in Gibson County fall into the greasy, fast food category.
Twenty-six percent of adults in the county are smokers.
Tuley says the overall physical environment needs to change and residents need access to more recreational facilities. She says walking paths and outdoor recreational space is coming as a part of the Stellar Grant plans.
