HAUBSTADT, IN (WFIE)- There's something different about the new benches at Haubstadt Community School. They're made from recycled materials the students collected, and next there could be a recycled picnic table.
It's an initiative that started in Haubstadt and is now taking off all over Gibson County.
The students at Haubstadt Community School have been recycling plastic bottle caps since the beginning of the school year.
For every 400 pounds they collect, they receive a new park bench made out of those recycled caps.
It's a special program with recycling company Green Tree Plastics in Evansville.
They've already received two park benches and are working towards a picnic table and the principal says he's amazed at their success.
"When we start talking about 400 pounds of bottle caps, I'm like, that's going to take a lot of trash bags of bottle caps, but we've got bins set up where people can bring it in. Like I said, sometimes they bring in bags full," said Principal John Obermeier.
Principal Obermeier says even parents have been getting involved with the initiative and collecting bottle caps at their workplace to recycle at the school.
