Jail garden puts inmates to work while saving thousands
News

GIBSON COUNTY, IN (WFIE)- The Gibson County jail just received final approval to move forward with a jail garden.

Sheriff George Ballard said the garden will be located right across the street from the jail and will be tended by non-violent offenders. The sheriff says corn, tomatoes and other produce grown there will be served to the inmates.

"Posey County jail has one, down in Mt. Vernon, I talked with Sheriff Oeth, he said they saved about $8,000 on meal expenses last year, and I'm going that sounds like a great idea, plus it gets the inmates out, they can work and earn some of their keep," Sheriff Ballard said.

Planting will begin this spring.
