Gibson County Health Dept. tackling unlicensed home baking shops

If you like the idea of starting a home baking business, you better think twice.

You're going to need a license.

The Gibson County Health Department says running shop from home can be dangerous, and lately things have gotten out of hand. 

Gibson County Food Inspector William Tuley tells 14 News he's seen a rise in the amount of people opening up home based baking and cooking businesses since last December.

He says he finds 2 or 3 of these a month, and that can be a problem.

Gibson County's unemployment rate frell from 7.5% in March to 6.6% in April according to figures released Friday by the Department of Workforce Development.  Like most of the Tri-State, jobless claims in the county are far lower than the rest of the state.  

Overall, Indiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined by 0.2 percent to 8.5 percent in April, the largest one month decrease in over a year. Private sector employment in the Hoosier state also increased by 6,800 jobs over the past month and exceeded the national rate of growth. Indiana has now experienced private sector employment growth in 37 of the past 40 months. 

Man accused of killing family dog says he's sorry

PATOKA, IN. (WFIE) -- Neighbors are continuing to show their support for a family who had to bury their dog after it was shot by a neighbor.

Several charges have been filed against that neighbor on Thursday night.

There's still an incredible amount of support for Jack and the McGrew family. Gibson County Prosecutor Rob Kreig did file three charges against 30-year-old Jeff Priest for shooting that dog and Priest tells 14 News that he is sorry.

Stellar Grant projects starting with senior housing cottages

PRINCETON, IN (WFIE)- HWC Engineering says the first project to get underway this summer will be the senior housing cottages in a Stellar Grant follow-up.

It will be a $6-mllion project with 60-units. The theater and storefront projects were also talked about but they have a later start date.

"Come this fall, we'll actually start building some things and then we'll be building things for the next three construction season and by the time we are done, we are going to do $22-million worth of work," says Jim Rice.

Man charged in dog shooting in Patoka

PATOKA, IN. (WFIE) -- New information has been released about the shooting of a dog that took place in Gibson County.

The Prosecutor's Office says Jeffrey Priest has been charged with criminal recklessness in the case.

Neighbors say he shot and killed the pet dog in front of several witnesses, including children earlier in the month in Patoka.

Authorities say he admits the dog was not acting aggressively.

A second grade teacher at Lowell North Elementary School received a $1,000 surprise on Thursday.

Jill Wright won the Peabody Leaders in Education award for being an outstanding teacher. Wright was nominated for the award and was then pushed to send in a formal application.
