Princeton theater will get new name, different functions in makeover

 

The City of Princeton has received a $3.4 million Stellar Communities grant to move forward with the renovation of the old theater.

The Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana broke the news to the city council Monday night, although it’s been anticipated for some time.

The theater will be renamed the Princeton Community Center Theater and will host not only live performing arts events but also have large rooms the public can rent for wedding receptions and other events.

Some American White Pelicans have stopped in the Tri-State for a spell while migrating from the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks to Sheri Sullivan for this photo which she says was taken at the Patoka River Fish and Wildlife Refuge north of Oakland City.  

"There were about 25 of these birds on Sunday," she told us. 

The birds will continue northward soon and spend the summer months in the northern U.S. and Canada before heading south again in the fall.

There was a groundbreaking this week for a new library in Haubstadt.

The $567,000 project is expected to be completed early in 2014.

The town council, library board members and others turned out for some ceremonial remarks at the site, which is across from the town hall.

If you've been downtown Princeton, you've probably noticed all of the renovations taking place at the former Greek's building.

It saddened many residents to see it closed after being on the square since 1906.  The candy store and restaurant was extremely popular in it's heyday and one of it'scustomers was the man who would become famous as Wendy's owner Dave Thomas.

Grants to assist Oakland City with community improvements

The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs recently announced that Oakland City was awarded a grant to demolish two building that were damaged by a tornado in 2011. The grant is for $74,925.

In addition, Duke Energy awarded the city a grant to help improve parks with trails to promote healthy living in the amount of $10,000.

“We are thrilled for Mayor Wirth and the residents of Oakland City,” stated Debbie Bennett-Stearsman, Vice President, Community Development.

Gibson County marriage licenses go digital

The Princeton Public Library is working on a lengthy process to make digital copies of marriage records dating back to 1882.

They began two years ago, converting archives to microfilm, or making a digital version available to the public.

Friends used book sale set for Oct. 5

The annual Friends of the Oakland City Columbia Twp. Public Library used book sale will be Oct. 5 from 9am-6pm and Oct. 6th from 9am-1pm.

A special Sneak Peek preview sale is available to Friends members on Oct. 4 from 4-7pm (memberships available at the door.) Funds raised at this sale will be used for various library programs and support during the year.
