Thanks to C.T. Montgomery of Owensville for passing along this great picture of Monday night's sunset.

It'll be another spring-like day with temperatures rising into the low 60s by early afternoon.  Enjoy!

Storm rolls in; temps will drop

Storm rolls in; temps will drop

Thanks to Kate Mullen who snapped this photo as storm clouds rolled into Darmstadt Tuesday morninig.  Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for Gibson and northern Vanderburgh Counties as a squall line moved through.  High winds were likely along with heavy rain.

Once the rain is over, cold temperatures will move back in for the next couple of days, with highs only in the 30s.

Our 50-degree days are coming to an end and a blast of winter weather is taking their place.  In fact, a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 6 a.m. Thursday to midnight Friday in Gibson County and the rest of the Tri-State.

Meteorologist Chad Sewich says we can expect temperatures to dip below freezing with an inch of blowing snow likely to fall.  Travel could be hazardous during the morning.

This is a picture of Alli & Trevor Barton  (from Houston, Texas) posing with a snowman they built at their grandparents' house in Oakland City.   Charlie & Genia Feistel are grandma and grandpa to these happy youngsters.

The snow hung around just long enough for the year's first snow creations but we'll see Texas-like temperatures by this weekend with highs in the 50s.

Heavy rain and yesterday's snow have area rivers on the rise.

The stage of the White River at Petersburg stands at 17.5 feet as of early Wednesday.  It is expected to crest at 19.7 feet on Monday.

At Hazleton, the river measured 16.3 feet with a 21 foot crest expected.

Some slick spots in Gibson County

Some slick spots in Gibson County

From the Gibson County Sheriff's Office:  "As you're driving around, please be careful and watch for slick spots - especially around curves, bridges, overpasses, etc.  There have been a few snow-related accidents already as the snow starts to stick and make the streets slick in spots. Please allow extra room between vehicles and give yourself extra time to reach your destination. Please remember to slow down or move over for emergency vehicles on the side of the road --- this includes tow trucks."

This year's winter? Similar to last year says NWS

This year's winter? Similar to last year says NWS

If you liked the weather last winter, you’ll love this winter.  That’s pretty much the evaluation of Pat Spoden, Science and Operations Officer with the National Weather Service Office.  The evaluation was part of a morning of weather event assessments and evaluations during the annual Winter Weather Workshop designed to help area emergency management personnel and transportation officials prepare for coming winter weather.

Last winter, snow in Gibson County ran just above average for the year while some parts of Southern Illinois were slightly below average.  Spoden says the alignment of overall weather systems for this winter season is shaping up to be very similar to last year, although some warmer weather could bring thunderstorms into the mix for the winter months.
